Parkskolan - summery of the ECCE report Year 3, 2005-2006

Plannings at Bishop Heber

During Year 3 of the ”ECCE” - European Citizens Challenging Education – project at Parkskolan different pilot projects have been run. Special measures have been taken to strengthen democracy/citizenship: increasing student involvement and cooperation with the local enterprizes, the local community and human organizations and internationalization.

The goals for Year 3

The fourth “ECCE” Comenius Conference , for staff and students, was held at Malbank School and Sixth Form Centre in Nantwich, England, from 9 to 13 November 2005. A Final Agreement was signed by the Headteachers and the Co-ordinators, reflecting the work which we agreed to carry out in our respective schools during the last year of the “ECCE” Project:
  1. Each school will fully implement their citizenship scheme of work within all subject areas appropriated.
  2. The designated website will be in place by Easter 2006. This will contain teaching materials and students´work.
  3. The final meeting will be held in Ornskoldsvik from 20th-24th May 2006. Its purpose is to evaluate the project using the 2EQBS Benchmarking tool.

Special measures to reach the goals – examples from Parkskolan

  1. To increase students involvement, to work with democracy questions and to widen the society engagement.
  2. To inspire all programs to organize extended program counsils with all students involved.
  3. To widen the work with the local community and local organizations.
  4. To have more Young Enterprize projects.
  5. To have the Biofuel environmental project as an integral part in the basic Civics course for all students.
  6. To share experiences through articles published in the internet magazine Freeway http://www.freeway.org
  7. To communicate through e-mail, the Freeway notice board and videoconferencing.

Endproducts

(- as written in the final joint report by Mrs Kate Soragna in the coordinating school Bishop Heber High School in Malpas, England)

“School Talks” – Issues of Citizenship

  • All partner schools produced a Power Point presentation for dissemination at both Conferences and copies of these have been distributed to all parties. The Presentations also included video clips.
  • As well as the ICT presentations, students also shared their work in groups during the Conference in November.
  • Students have communicated through Video Conferencing and e-mails, as well as the “Notice Board” on the “Freeway” site.
  • The work undertaken within the Citizenship Programme has been, or is about to be, put on an “ECCE” Website. (Previously the Freeway.org site has been used as the vehicle for communication/dissemination.
Within individual schools, Assemblies have been held

“Youth Voice” – Democracy in School

  • School Councils are proactive in leading the agenda forward
  • Students either sit on or observe Full Governors’ meetings
  • Students work with the “Youth Parliament” in order to understand the importance of democracy in their lives
  • Students have been involved in the appointments of staff

“Youth Talks” – working with the Local Community

  • All partner schools have interacted with their local community in many different ways (see individual School Reports), including investigating the problems of litter and vandalism, the effects of rural isolation and working with the local council
Though each school works to these strands, the activities differ according to Year Groups, facilities and resources available and the type of educational institution. This individualism features in each school’s individual Report.
