Europe – The New Superpower Good Or Bad Idea?
Right now, there’s one big superpower in the world, the United States of America. The reason they are that powerful isn’t their large military nor is it the number of people living in the US, it has economical reasons. I don’t know which country you, the reader, are from, but I would not be surprised if your country has some business with the US, a very large part of the world do. And even if there isn’t a big import-export contract lying around somewhere, I bet that you at least have a couple of McDonalds. Have you watched the American movie Spider-man? There’s a quote from that movie which I think says a lot :"With great power comes great responsibility." Maybe the Americans should take their own advice. So, perhaps the world needs another superpower to keep the balance, perhaps Europe could give it a go… Strength in numbers is good, that would make it much harder for the US to use economy like they do now. Let’s say that the US don’t want to do business with a European country for some unknown reason, that’s bad for that country. But if all European countries refused to do business with the US, that would be bad for the Americans. But is it possible to achieve that kind of agreement in a continent with more than 50 countries, languages, cultures and so on? In my family we’re only four people and we sometimes have trouble deciding what we should have for dinner. But maybe that’s what Europe could become, one big family. Not always agreeing on different things, but always standing by each other in the time of need. Well, then it’s solved. Europe becomes the new superpower in the world and keeps the US under control. “If you don’t play nice you don’t get to play at all...” All is right in the world again, right..? Maybe not, remember what happened the last time there were two hostile macho countries in the world? Does a little something called ‘The Cold War” ring any bells? I’m not saying that it will happen like it did then. I’m sure nuclear weapons are out of the equation, but there’s one important truth about today we have to face : ‘Money Makes The World Go Round’. We don’t have to like it, but it’s pretty much true. So if someone would threaten the USA’s finances and thereby, their source of power, it would lead to a lot of cranky Americans. Another problem that could arise with Europe gaining in power is how would our behaviour change? “Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely” is another great quote, this time not from Spider-Man. The risk is lesser for Europe than the USA though. Even if Europe is one continent, it’s still a lot of countries. Countries that are very different from each other and don’t get along half of the time, so that makes it harder for just a few people to take too much control. But that could of course change. With the European Union, all member countries get pretty much the same laws and step by step the English language is conquering the world. Can Europe afford to become the next superpower in the world and do we dare not to? Think about it. © 2005 Freeway Writers: Petra Grundström (sp06-08@park.se). |
